Ethiopian Airlines takes delivery of Africa’s first Airbus A350-1000

Ethiopian Airlines, the national flag carrier of Ethiopia and the largest operator of Airbus aircraft in Africa has received its initial A350-1000 from Airbus in Toulouse, France. This marks the first of four A350-1000s to be delivered to the airline. As the first African-based operator of this aircraft model, Ethiopian Airlines will use the A350-1000 to improve its premium service on important routes such as Washington D.C., London, Paris, and Frankfurt.

Ethiopian Airlines currently has 21 A350 Family aircraft in operation. The airline is planning to expand its fleet with 14 more A350 aircraft in the near future, comprising 11 A350-900 and three A350-1000 models. The introduction of the A350-1000 will enhance operational consistency with the existing A350-900 fleet, facilitating smooth integration by utilizing the same pilots and mechanics for training and maintenance procedures.

With a total capacity of 395 seats, the A350-1000 will increase Ethiopian Airlines’ passenger capacity and provide enhanced passenger experience in the largest business class cabin in the airline’s fleet. Ethiopian Airlines will also introduce Airbus' new HBCplus satcom connectivity solution, offering seamless, high-speed gate-to-gate connectivity.

The A350 is the world’s most modern and efficient widebody aircraft and the long-range leader in the 300-410 seater category. The A350’s clean sheet design includes state-of-the-art technologies and aerodynamics delivering unmatched standards of efficiency and comfort.

The Airspace cabin of the A350 is renowned for being the quietest among twin-aisle aircraft, with a 50% reduction in noise footprint compared to previous models. It provides passengers and crew with the latest in modern in-flight amenities for a pleasant flying experience. Thanks to its new-generation engines and lightweight materials, the A350 is the most fuel-efficient large widebody aircraft available.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A350 aircraft is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus is targeting to have its aircraft up to 100% SAF capable by 2030.

By the end of September 2024, 1,340 A350s had been ordered by 60 customers worldwide, making it one of the most successful widebody aircraft ever.
