EUROJET Turbo, the consortium behind the EJ200 engines used in the Eurofighter Typhoon, has recently entered into a contract with the NATO Eurofighter & Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) to supply 59 new EJ200 engines to the Spanish Air Force.
The EJ200 engine, developed through the collaboration of Rolls-Royce, MTU Aero Engines, ITP Aero, and Avio Aero, has consistently shown outstanding performance since its initial production delivery.
Rolls-Royce will be instrumental in the production of engine modules, bringing its unparalleled expertise and innovation to fulfil the requirements of the Spanish Air Force.
The contract was signed at Getafe Air Force Base in Madrid by General Manager of NETMA Air Vice Marshall (AVM) Simon Ellard (ret.), CEO of EUROJET Ralf Breiling, and covers EJ200 engines for the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft in the second phase of the Halcón acquisition project.
The engines, slated for assembly at the ITP Aero Facility in Ajalvir, are planned for delivery beginning in 2029. The EJ200 engine, boasting an unmatched performance record, versatile multi-role capability, and top-tier availability at competitive life-cycle costs, is ideally positioned to fulfil Air Force needs both now and in the future.
Since the initial delivery of the production engine in 2003, more than 1,400 EJ200 engines have been supplied to the Air Force fleets of nine countries, accumulating over 1.5 million flying hours.
"At Rolls-Royce, we are proud to contribute to the EUROJET consortium with the EJ200 representing outstanding and innovative capabilities that ensure our allies maintain their operational edge. This new contract reflects the confidence placed in our technology and reinforces our commitment to innovation, partnership and supporting operational readiness for modern air forces," said Chris Davie, Rolls-Royce Director of UK & International Mature Programmes.
On signing the contract, Mr Breiling said: "The confidence that Spain and the core nations continue to show in the EJ200 engine and the Eurofighter platform is inspiring. The EJ200 as part of the Eurofighter Typhoon provides a world-class, combat-proven asset for the Spanish Air Force. This order continues the deep partnership between European industry and government to develop and maintain this technology edge, which is key to the ongoing relevance of European defence."
"The signing of today’s contract finalises a successful collaborative procurement effort to provide 59 engines for Spain. The EJ200 is a key asset that delivers cutting-edge performance and powers the Eurofighter Typhoon to secure our skies and reinforce NATO’s deterrence capabilities,” added AVM Simon Ellard (ret.)
