In a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency and safety of air travel, Saab, Thales, and ST Engineering have formalized their collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This strategic agreement is aimed at fostering long-term innovation and modernization of Singapore’s Air Traffic Management (ATM) infrastructure, which is critical for accommodating the increasing air traffic demands in the region. The partnership brings together the expertise and technological prowess of three leading companies in the aerospace and defence sectors, each contributing unique capabilities to the project.
The MoU outlines a comprehensive framework for cooperation that will enable the development and implementation of advanced ATM solutions tailored specifically for Singapore’s unique airspace challenges. This initiative is expected to leverage cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics to create a more efficient air traffic control system. By integrating these technologies, the partners aim to enhance real-time decision-making processes, improve situational awareness for air traffic controllers, and ultimately ensure safer skies for both commercial and private aviation.
The modernization efforts will focus on streamlining operations, reducing delays, and optimizing flight routes, which is particularly vital given Singapore's strategic position as a major aviation hub in Southeast Asia. The collaboration also emphasizes sustainability, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of air travel through more efficient routing and flight management practices. As Singapore continues to position itself as a leader in aviation innovation, this partnership represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing the future needs of air traffic management in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
This Singapore-focused partnership was signed on 20 November at the Sweden – Singapore Royal Business Forum and aims to establish a robust industrial framework that leverages global products and services. “This initiative shows our joint industrial commitment to Singapore, and that we are working pro-actively to reduce time and implementation risks in the introduction of the next generation of ATM technologies in Singapore,” says Per Ahl, Head of Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions.
The partnership will merge technologies from Saab and Thales with local expertise from ST Engineering Mission Software and Services, providing smooth support for all phases of ATM, from en route operations to gate management. Saab will contribute a fully integrated automation and Digital Tower Suite, called i-DTS, which combines a comprehensive Advanced Surface Movement Guidance & Control System and Digital Tower features into one product. This collaboration seeks to establish a new benchmark in ATM, with the possibility of extending this cooperative approach to other regions worldwide.
Saab's Digital Tower Suite offers improved visual situational awareness for any airport, regardless of location, and provides the flexibility to offer on-demand services for multiple airports. Incorporating the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance & Control System enhances surveillance and efficiency for both the airport's surface and approaching aircraft. The Digital Tower Suite boosts a controller's capability to manage airport traffic under all visibility and weather conditions.
