Lockheed Martin Unveils Scalable Counter Drone Solution

As the threat posed by small Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) continues to evolve, Lockheed Martin is presenting a novel strategy to counter these emerging challenges. A recent field event inaugurated a planned series of innovative demonstrations highlighting a scalable, layered defence system, engineered to detect, track, identify, and neutralize UAS.

This modular, open-architecture solution integrates battle-tested command and control with AI-enabled detection and tracking software, cost-effective sensors, and a growing range of effectors. Designed for swift deployment and seamless integration with other systems, it offers a comprehensive approach to modern challenges.

“Integrating diverse sensors through a user-optimized command and control (C2) system helps simplify threat identification, and we have the complementary technology offerings to convert collected data into actionable information,” said Tyler Griffin, C-UAS director at Lockheed Martin. “Our open architecture approach offers an agile, layered defence solution that accelerates outcomes relative to this dynamic threat. This foundational demo highlights how we can deliver the mission today and sets the stage for what Lockheed Martin and our partners will deliver in weeks and months ahead.”

Key Highlights:

  • Modular Design: Open systems strategy enables the swift integration of top-tier sensors, effectors, and C2 upgrades, offering flexibility and adaptability to respond to evolving threats.

  • Advanced AI: AI-driven software, developed from comprehensive real-world operations, enhances capabilities in threat detection, tracking, and mitigation, thereby increasing operator efficiency in addressing both individual threats and swarm attacks.

  • Rapid Scalability: The solution is crafted to streamline collaboration with partners, ensuring customers maintain a competitive edge against emerging threats.

  • Demonstration Success: Lockheed Martin and its partners have successfully demonstrated the capability to detect, track, and implement mitigation strategies against a variety of small UAS, encompassing both individual targets and incoming drone swarms. This significant advancement highlights our dedication to providing effective, scalable, and integrated solutions for the Counter-UAS mission.

  • Why it Matters: Effective coordination is essential, given the limited time available to detect, track, and neutralize a swarm. Sensors designed to monitor numerous small, low-altitude drones must promptly communicate with a command and control system. This system is responsible for sorting targets, assigning them to interceptors, and handling multiple engagements concurrently.

Lockheed Martin's innovative approach and dedication to open architecture guarantee that their customers can access cutting-edge technologies. Their proficiency in systems integration, coupled with their experience in delivering AI-driven software to operators, enhances resilience against emerging threats. As the threat landscape evolves, Lockheed Martin is prepared to provide adaptable and scalable C-UAS capabilities.
